The New South Wales (NSW) government is embarking on a significant endeavor to bolster its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. A substantial investment of AU $4.1 million will be allocated to install over 671 EV charging points at 391 sites across the state. A matching AU$8 million in private investment will further amplify this commitment.

Waverley Council, City of Newcastle, Evie Networks, EVSE, EVX, Jolt Charge, Plus ES, and ChargePost are eight grant recipients who will install the new kerbside charging stations across 16 local government areas.

The installation of these chargers, which will range from 7 kilowatts to 75 kilowatts, will encompass a variety of types. These include pole-mounted, pedestal, and ‘kiosk’ EV chargers. They will be strategically placed on kerbsides or in public council car parks. All chargers will be operational within the next 12 months, ensuring round-the-clock availability for the public.

This project is part of the NSW Government’s AU $209 million investment into charging infrastructure, which includes AU $149 million for EV fast chargers to reduce battery top-up times, AU $20 million for EV destination charging grants to install ports at regional tourist destinations, and AU $10 million for retrofitting EV infrastructure in apartment buildings. Additionally, the NSW Government is committing AU $260 million to underpin the rollout of an updated NSW EV Strategy, set to be released later this year.

This broader strategy aims to future-proof NSW’s transportation network and reduce carbon emissions. Continuous investment in infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with local communities will be key to ensuring the success of such projects.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “This investment will significantly increase the availability of public charging options and give people confidence their next vehicle purchase can be an EV.” She also highlighted the need for accessible charging options, as “Almost 30% of NSW drivers do not have access to private, off-street parking to charge an EV. That figure is considerably higher in metro areas.”

By expanding the state’s EV charging infrastructure network, NSW is paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. This initiative supports the adoption of electric vehicles. It contributes to the state’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet its net zero emissions targets.

New South Wales’ massive investment in EV charging infrastructure represents a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

By providing accessible and convenient charging options, the state empowers residents to embrace electric vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment. This comprehensive approach, combining kerbside charging, fast chargers, destination charging, and EV-ready buildings, demonstrates NSW’s commitment to leading the way in sustainable transportation.
